Every program, networking event, certification study group, and member experience begins with volunteers who care about our community.
If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back while growing your own leadership skills, serving on the Austin SHRM Board may be the opportunity you've been waiting for.
Thank you for your interest in serving on the Pinnacle Award-Winning Austin SHRM Board of Directors.
Our Board is made up of dedicated HR professionals from a wide variety of industries and career stages who share one common goal: creating meaningful experiences and opportunities for our members.
Together, we collaborate, learn from one another, celebrate successes, and help shape a strong and connected HR community across Central Texas.
Serving on the Board isn't just about filling a role. It's about becoming part of a team that is passionate about making a difference.
The President, President-Elect, and Past President serve consecutive one-year terms. All other Board members serve two-year terms.
Most Board roles average 5–10 hours per month, allowing volunteers to make a meaningful impact while balancing their professional and personal commitments. Some roles have busier periods throughout the year. For example, Conference leadership roles require additional time as the annual conference approaches.
We encourage you to review the individual position descriptions to learn more about these leadership opportunities. You may also reach out directly to a current member of the Austin SHRM Board of Directors.

“I came to Austin in January 2019 and quickly engaged with Austin SHRM. This group of friends and HR colleagues is amazing, and they quickly embraced me and welcomed me to my new town. I am so glad that I applied to be a member of the Board of Directors. I love being able to stay in tune with what is happening in the people management sphere and also being able to give back to my profession by serving my fellow HR professionals. Austin SHRM provides the best of both worlds—the benefits of being a large chapter along with the opportunity to grow your professional circle of confidants, advisors, and lifelong friends.”
— Brian Hayes, 2022 Past President
“Joining Austin SHRM has enabled me to build and grow my HR career by learning from some of the best local professionals. Whether I am making connections at a networking event, hearing insights from experienced professionals during a panel discussion, or sharing my own ideas at a roundtable, I am confident that I chose the best local resource to strengthen my HR skills. I have greatly appreciated the opportunities to grow within the diversity space and learn how DEI connects with the many functions of HR. I will continue dedicating my time to supporting HR efforts throughout our community.”
— Kenyetta Smith, 2022 VP of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
“I've been serving on the Austin SHRM Board for almost three years, and it has been nothing short of amazing. I found so much fulfillment in being part of a group of individuals who made it their duty to serve and lead our Austin SHRM community. Through changing circumstances and evolving member needs, the Board has remained constant. I would recommend that anyone looking to be part of something bigger than themselves consider joining the Austin SHRM Board of Directors. It may not always be easy, but our mission and vision are clear—we are moving forward and would love others to help us reach new and greater heights.”
— Maya Kelly, 2022 Co-VP of Conference
